Joan As Police Woman is Double J Artist In Residence this March
Joan Wasser is a formidable talent, and throughout March she will join Double J as our Artist In Residence.
As Joan As Police Woman, she has made an inordinate amount of incredible music that has made her an immensely revered solo artist.
As part of the Dambuilders and Antony & the Johnsons, she helped bring a whole new side to indie rock to the masses through the 90s and 2000s.
And, as a session musician, she’s appeared with everyone from Elton John to Lou Reed to Sheryl Crow and so many more incredible artists.
This woman knows music.
As Double J Artist In Residence, Joan As Police Woman will break down the musical anatomy of many of her favourites songs in order to learn what makes them so captivating.
“When I first listen to a song I listen as a whole and just take it in. I get the vibe from it,” she says.
“Then I start to obsess on the drums. I start to notice what is going on with the bass and the guitar. I hear what is happening with the non-typical band instruments like the keys, the pianos, synths, strings and the orchestras. And finally, the voice, the singing and the vocals.
“So, this month as Artist in Residence I am going to pull apart the elements of my favourite songs and explore the sounds and arrangements that reveal themselves over time.”
After that, it makes sense that episode one will be an examination of drums in some of the greatest songs you know and a few that you might not have heard yet. It’s going to be fascinating listening for all music lovers.
